USDA environmental scientists usually make decent money (~$65-85,000+/yr with good benefits).  They can perform a wide variety of jobs.  Usually they work on environmental research studying grassland dynamics, biodiversity and ecosystem stability, ecology of invasive species and agricultural weeds, genetics of agricultural crops, etc. etc.

    Most USDA scientist jobs require an advanced degree (PhD) plus several years of postdoctoral research.  To be successful as a scientists, you need strong quantitative (math), reading, writing, and communication skills.
