on average a short board will run you $250-$700 depends on size, brand, if its new or used and where you buy it. A long board runs from 300$-900$ typically because they are bigger, easier to ride, and have good speed and balance.

it all depends on what part of the country your in, what materials the board is being made out of, who the shaper is, and what is in stock (or over stocked).  a good way to go (especially for beginners) is a used board by a local shaper.  a used board in decent condition should run arround 200-300.  new shortboards can be anywhere from 250 (i picked up four the other day on sale) to 1250 (hollow carbon fiber aviso).  it just comes down to knowing exactly what you want.  if you dont know exactly what you want ask someone at your local shop to help you pick out a board, if its a good shop they should be very helpful and not pushy.  tell them your price range and experience and they should be able to find you something close.

There is no real 'Average' price that I could compute. You can buy a used board for a couple hundred bucks. New boards can range from $300 -$1,000.00 US, depending on the size, quality, artwork etc. In the last few years, I have paid between $500.00 and $700 for four different boards. A custom board designed and shaped just for me was the most expensive. A really nice fun board, shaped by a real quality shaper cost just a little over $500. You can buy a piece of s%*t popout for around $300., but I only recommend them for first summer beginners and rental boards. (Check the link on pop-outs, you might find it enlightening). If you want a real (not a pop-out) board, I would expect to pay at least $450.00.... if that helps.
