I really need to know, also how much does the nikon d60 zoom? I'm talking about the lenses that come with the camera, not telescopic ones you can buy afterwards.

  1. There are 3 kits available for the D40:

    - 18-55 mm

    - 18-135 mm

    - 18-55 mm + 55-200 mm VR

Multiply everything by 1.5x to get the 35mm equivalent, as mentioned above, if you are more comfortable with the 35mm world.

So the answer depends on which kit you are looking at.

I have the D40 with the 18-55 mm lens. It's a great camera for every day family photography. It certainly leaves me wishing I had two other lenses whenever I am outside with the camera. But reality is that if I had a wide angle & a telephoto zoom, they will probably see less than 15%-20% usage combined. For the vast majority of my use, the kit lens is adequate.

  2. The lenses that come with the camera are 18-55mm. That's a zoom of roughly 3x, but that doesn't really mean anything. You could also have a 100-300mm lens and that would be 3x (300/100 = 3) but it would make what you see through the camera a lot bigger.

The eye sees at roughly 50mm. That means that the 18-55mm will go from seeing a lot more than your eye sees to just a tiny bit less.

  3. As Hipp said its an 18 mm to 55 mm. It used to be most film SLR came with just a 50mm lens. What you are getting now lets you go from a bit of a wide angle to a standard lens Its a good lens for many situations. Remember with the crop factor it will give you an angle of view similar a 27 to approx 87 mm lens

  4. Check this link out, it's a visual aid as to what focal length translates to in terms of zoom:

Both the D40 and D60 (which are sold in kits 99% of the time) come with an 18-55mm lens, so the zoom is the same. It's moderate, not really close up, but it's okay.

The only difference between the two kit lenses is that the D60's lens has Vibration Reduction, which some say is awesome.

  5. It depends upon the lens you use .. I have the 18-200 mm that would equate to a 11x if it was a point and shoot camera.  I also have a $7,000 lens that is a 1x.

No lens comes with a the camera unless you buy a "kit" ... that would include a 18-55 mm lens which is a medium wide angle to portrait lens length
