  1. I read an article that said they weigh about 5 ounces.  If I can find it again, I'll edit this response and add the link.

  2. The Medals:

The Olympic medals are designed especially for each individual Olympic Games by the host city's organizing committee. Each medal must be at least three millimeters thick and 60 millimeters in diameter. Also, the gold and silver Olympic medals must be made out of 92.5 percent silver, with the gold medal covered in six grams of gold.

  3. The current Gold medals are actually made of silver and coated with 1/5 of an ounce of gold worth about $83. The last solid gold medals were given away in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1912.

  4. No medal is pure anything.  The medals are a combination of gold, silver and copper to make it a harder alloy.  Just like you would find in the coins we use every day in life.

If you buy a gold bullion ounce today you will be paying close to $1,000 because of the market.  Those coins may have an ounce of gold but it is not pure.  The medals are no different;  they do not have an ounce of gold  it is normally around a quarter of an once
