  1. It depends on your computer and its peripherals.

    I have an HP Pavilion, with CMV Model CM-922D monitor.  Here are the wattages I measured:

    COMPUTER AT REST         6 WATTS

    COMPUTER IN USE           62 WATTS

    MONITOR AT REST             2 WATTS

    MONITOR IN USE              58 WATTS

    MODEM                                 4 WATTS

    SPEAKERS                             1 WATT

    So at rest I am using 13 watts

  2. A typical desktop computer uses around 200 watts while idling.  This can be increases if the computer is performing an operation, or reduced if the computer goes into power-saving mode.

    200 watts = 0.2 kilowatts

    Energy = Power * Time

    E = P * t

    E = (0.2 kilowatts) * (24 hours)

    E = 4.8 kilowatt-hours

    That's how it would show up on your electricity meter.
