  1. We didn't  "get" any electricity, what actually happened is was didn't use as much as we would have.

But onto the actual question.  Last year, when the event was first held in Sydney, Australia a minor 2.10% decrease in electricity consumption compared to the usual decline at that hour.  I would assume the percent would be less based on the global scale of this years event.

  2. the sad thing is that after they make this symbolic gesture of turning off all the "unnecessary" lights for the given hour, they turn them back on again and go home.  I dont think that anyone can argue that turning off things when not in use is a bad thing, and whether or not you believe in global warming or whatever, the fact is that when you dont use electricity you dont get charged for it.

  3. There's no telling what the usage would have been if no one had turned their lights off, so any estimates will be pure guesswork.  The guesstimate will be on the high side to make those who participated "feel good", while electric companies simply increase their rates to compensate for any shortfall in profits.  Life goes on, the world keeps spinning, the sun continues to cause global warming.
