Question:

How much energy do those little cheap electric lamp timers that turn on and off your lamp use?

I like to use mine to turn on and on my lamp at night, because i always read when i go to bed, and then i fall asleep and forget to turn off my light. This means that i have a lamp burning for like 7 or 9 hours as I sleep, which wastes electricity. The timer prevents this.

BUT, if the timer, which is constantly running 24/7, uses more energy in 24 hours than the bulb does in 7 hours, there's no point in doing this, right?

And please don't tell me to buy a book light. Those things obliterate batteries, and batteries are expensive.

Thanks.

  1. Mechanical ones use no electric at all

  2. I bought one at harbor frieght that is mechanical and the only electricty used is by the light itself. The other type use no more than a alarm clock which is very little. about 1 tenth of a 60 watt light bulb

  3. 8 or 10 watts
