Basically how much energy does a New York City Subway car use? Obviously it's electric-powered, but that power is provided from a coal or gas burning plant somewhere in the city. I'm trying to figure out how much carbon emissions my commute to work creates.

  1. hm. a lot.

  2. "According to the United States Department of Energy, energy expenditure on the New York City Subway rail service was 3492 BTU/passenger mile (3684 kJ/passenger km) in 1995. This compares to 3702 BTU/passenger mile for automobile travel. This is , however, a national average, and city driving is very inefficient compared to highway."

  3. This is a great question and I have no idea. What you do need to remember about your footprint is that is divided by millions of people, that is why group commuting is so much better than individual. Good luck finding out!
