How much energy is 440 watts?

If i turned off my TV 4 a week and saved 440 watts, what could i power with that 440 watts. How many TVs would it take 2 power a city? A large city?

  1. Well, its a relative question. First, if your TV was still plugged in, and its newish, it still uses energy to power the sensing circuit for the remote.

    To give some kind of referance, a 25watt bulb uses 25 watts..in what the industry refers to a watt hour. so 25 watts per hour.

    Since 60watt bulbs are the most common used, you could power a 60W bulb for approximately 7.3 hours.

    Since the industry deals mostly with KiloWatts....in comparison, 440 watts is a small amount.

    Or scientifically to make you feel better,  you just saved 1,584,000 Joules of energy..assuming it was 440 watts saved in one hour.


  2. tvs don't make power they use it.  youd save more by turning off your stove

  3. 440 Watts is not a measure of energy it is a measure of instantaneous power. A watt hour is a measure of energy as are BTU's. If all TV's were shut off it would not be enough to power a city any bigger than 10000 people.
