  1. It varies because some of them are digital and don't need to be lit. But I would guess it wouldn't bee too much, but more than it takes to light one room in your house...depending on you house size.

  2. Whatever energy is used, my attitude is that they could be turned off after say, midnight, and not come on again until around dusk the next day, so they really only need to be lit for around 5 hours.

The companies who own and maintain them, pass on their usage to the companies who use them to advertise, who in turn pass on that cost to us....the mug in the street who buys their goods and services.

I think I see which road you're leading us down, and I for one would happily decline to buy the goods and services of those that don't ask for the bill-board to be unlit. Who actually takes any notice of them during the night-time hours except, perhaps, taxi drivers?

  3. A lot of billboards have solar panels to collect solar energy.

  4. I don't think that there are special kinds of lights that are specifically used for billboards.  I believe that almost any type of outdoor flood light can be used.

Most older bill boards would use quartz floodlights.  Each fixture would use between 500 and 1500 watts.   Newer bill boards might use HID lighting, which would only use 250 to 500 watts.   And now there are LED and solar lighting kits available that use far less than that.

So it seems that the question is more complicated than it first seems.
