I have 2 AmStaffs, one that is probably just under 2 years old, and the other is probably 4 months. (Both adopted.) It has been raining like mad, and they refuse to go out even for pottying! (I carry them out, or have treats.) Forget going outside for a walk!

My older dog doesn't seem to mind missing her walks for a few days, but of course my little puppy is going crazy without them!

How long should their walks be? I take the puppy out until She decides she's had enough, usually she will sniff the grass then plop herself down.

Does anyone use a treadmill for their dogs? I know it sounds silly, but with how much they HATE water & rain, fall is coming soon and I know they won't want to go out much.

Here they are after a good walk! http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg37/chalbri/P8273209.jpg

  1. i've used a treadmill for my dog before. but only one out my three actually likked it. i can't really tell how big your puppy is, but i'm guessing medium and no more than 20 pounds. i'm a horrible estimater

to use the treadmill, i put my dog on it while i was off and let her walk around on it. then i took her off and turned it on real slow. (let your dog sniff it as much as they want. it will help them get usd to it). then i put the dog on it (once again, really slow. maybe 0.5-1.0) and let her walk. NEVER LEAVE THE DOG UNSUPERVISED!!!! in order to do this, your dog will have to be leashed to the treadmill and you don't want accidents. if the dog looks tired, pants heavily, or tries to get off, take them off and that should indicate how much exercise they need. if the dog can handle it, icrease the speed. always keep it at a walk though. trying to have your dog run is risky on a treadmill. 10-15 minutes or as long as your usual walk should suffice for the big one as it doesn't seem to care for excercise. the smaller may need more time.

  2. OHMAIGAWD! Adorable!

Sorry, had to get that out!

I personally use a treadmill for my pitbulls and other dogs. They love it! I hang their favorite toy just in front of them and put it on a steady walking pace. (I suggest getting on it first and setting it to as fast as you would walk them) I use mine most often during the Hurricane season, so they still get exercise.

And for the pup, I play tug of war inside A LOT when it is raining because, like yours, mine won't dare get wet lol.

  3. Puppies need lots and lots and lots of exercise, when she plops down like she does, she has probably had enough exercise.

You can use a treadmill to walk the dogs, it will take some time, start slow and have treats on hand to entice them.

    Good luck
