  1. if you take your dogs for that long walks it will be best to get a collie as shelties cant walk that far

i have a sheltie and he has bout 30 mins walk and he gets really tired from that so not a good idea to take him or hour or 2 hour walks.

    hope this helps

  2. The amount your giving your other dogs will be certainly be enough. Each collies activity level is a little different but generally speaking they are the couch potato of the herding breeds. Shelties need a little more exercise but because of their size they do ware out faster.

They do need mental stimulation. While taking part in herding and the like is great. You have to be sure to get a physical from your vet. Dog sports are hard work and an unsound collie can easily hurt himself. Although my next collie (getting him in spring, a blue merle) will be a conformation and herding dog, my last one never competed in dog sports and was a joy to live with. I got him extensively obediance trained as a pup. Then daily asked him those commands, on walks, before he got treats, or food, before you throw a ball. This combined with the exercise you are providing and socialization should be enough to keep his mind busy.

We have a few good breeders in my area who breed blue merles, others who breed just tris and sable. You may have to search a wider radious to get the markings you want. Just be carefull to get pups from a breeder who has full health clearences. Collies are suceptable to several illnesses. Many of which can more or less be avoided through health clearences. 3. They'll need about the same exercise as your other two dogs.  If you get a small sheltie maybe an hour will be sufficient, if you get a collie then 1-2 three times a day will be great.

    Good luck with your dog.

  4. The exercise you're giving your Irish Setter would be about right but in addition either breed (Sheltie or Collie) will need jobs to do that use its mind. Herding dogs will find jobs to do for themselves if you don't give them one (and you won't like their choice LOL). The job can be obedience training, herding, learning tricks, etc.

Those are the national breed clubs in the U.S.  If you live outside the U.S. just Google the national breed club in your country.
