I have an older boat. since the engines work differently than a car engine I would like to know how much exhaust smoke is considered normal. I noticed the other boats on the lake have some exhaust smoke coming out the back. Since its not normal to see it coming out of a car what is to be expected from a boat?

  1. Smoke unless it's a diesel very little> But steam from heat transfer is normal> If black it's to much gas or fuel> Blue oil> White in diesel is fuel unburned> If it hangs in the air it's fuel but if it evaporates it's steam> Slick on the water is a good clue of oil & fuel issues>>

  2. You might see some smoke when its started up if the valve guides are worn, but during normal operations, there should not be any smoke.

  3. A little blue smoke if you are running the right mixture A lot of blue smoke if you are mixing to muck oil in the gas. if there is way to much smoke add gas if there's no smoke at all add a little 2 stroke oil

  4. that is a question that can not be answered there is nothing to measure it   if it runs good  dont worry

    happy boating

  5. it's called blowby... bluish grey is the color of burning oil... motor will run fine this way but you should cneck the oil level after every trip to get an idea of how much oil it is burning. if it gets  bad enough that you can't see behind you then you will know it's time for an engine.  It smokes because the motor is old and worn... short of rebuilding or replacing,,, just keep it full of oil and enjoy the ride
