For extras...

For lunch and dinners?

Mostly Lunch and dinners? I know it really depends on how much junk I buy while I am there but for an American for 9 days-how much extra cash should I have on me?

  1. if you'll go to fancy restaurants every evening, you'll need 300 extra just for food. but normal food and minimal extras will cost you about 200 or so.

  2. As a fellow American going to Ireland for the first time this summer, I've been advised to use my credit card as much as possible, and bring a small amount of cash. You'll usually get a better exchange rate through the credit card companies. Also, call your company first, find out what they charge, if anything to convert from euros to dollars. Capital One does not charge, Citicard charges 3%, Washington Mutual charges 1%. Also tell them where and when you're traveling so they don't flag or freeze your account for unusual charges!

There are ATM's in the major cities, and hotels often have exchange desks. The WORST place to buy currency is at the airports! Very expensive. You may find it easier to pay cash in pubs if they're busy and crowded, but for meals, site-seeing and gifts, I'd go with the credit card (or ATM card w/Visa MC logo).

  3. If I were you I would budget €100 a day for food, travel and other expenses you may not expect.

If you want you can spend about €5 on lunch in a place like McDonalds or you can end up spending about €20 for somewhere a bit nicer including drinks.

  4. I would like to stress you can do Europe on $4 a day, however, I understand the need to spend.

What you don't want to do is bring CASH however.

  5. 900 Euro spend 100 every day

  6. I would agree that 100 euro a day for most people would do fine,

Ireland is not that cheap but its a holiday .

For $4 a day you would not get much & spend the whole 9 days searching for bargains not enjoying yourself .

I would nt worry about carrying cash even in Dublin , it is pretty safe

  7. I also agree with the $100 a day. As far as meals, depending on where you stay, breakfast comes with the price of the room(I do miss those Irish breakfasts) and for lunch and dinner you can get a very good and filling meal in the pubs for $8-15. A pint will cost you $4-6. Souvenirs will be hard to choose from and the price range is wide open. The gas however will hurt. 3 yr's ago we paid nearly $10 a gallon. Luckily with a small fuel efficient car we didn't have to fill up very often.
