Question:

How much fabric for...?

I'm very new at sewing my own clothing, but how does one determine how much fabric to use? I mean, if you wanted to be precise, you could cut out all your shapes and pieces with paper, put them in a rectangle shape, and measure that. But is there a simple equation, or an even simpler way to determine how much fabric you would need?

  1. You start by using patterns that tell you how much to get. Then, experience will help you decide how much yardage you need for different items and different sizes.

For example let's say a person who is a size 12, I would always figure 2 yards for a sleeveless  top but  4 yards if it has long sleeves. A prom gown for that person will probably take 5 yards. A pair of pants, probably 2-and-a-half or 3 yards. I know that from already having made several things from patterns.

  2. It will tell you on the back of the pattern and if you are new at sewing you should be using a pattern

    good luck and have fun

  3. Some pieces of the pattern must be laid out a certain way. Some pieces must be cut on the fold, some on the bias. It isn't just about cutting them out in as little space as possible.

It also depends on the fabric. Some fabric you need more fabric depending on the pattern, like a plaid or a stripe. Velvet and fabric with a nap needs to laid out differently.

Your pattern will include how to lay out your pattern piece.

If you don't cut out the pattern piece right your garment may not hang right. Collars must be cut on the bias to fit right on the shirt.

  4. On the back of each pattern is a chart that gives the amount of fabric needed to cut that particular pattern out in total. It includes all trim amounts, all lining and underlining amounts also.
