How much fabric need for a queen sized quilt?

I'm making a queen sized quilt for one of my friends as a present and I don't know how much fabric I'll need for the bac side. Can someone help?

  1. measure the bed length and width, could be over sized or have a very high mattress. once you have measurement for the bed. depending on the width of the fabric you will need the total length plus the drop (amount that hangs down the side of bed) most fabric will be 54 wide so you will have 108 to work with and queens are about 86 long so you could order at least 5 yards ,. hint any good fabric store clerk can figure it out for you with the measurements.  always measure good luck , PS of course you need the same amount for both sides if you are making a quilt or duvet.
