For a single duvet cover, I use one king-size sheet, folded in half and seamed up the bottom and side. But if you want to buy fabric, find fabric that is 54 inches wide, and get 5 yards.   Pillowcases take 1 yard each.

I am assuming when you say single bed, you mean a twin bed.  Ok, the easiest way to determine this is to either use twin bed flat sheets to make your duvet, or measure the sheet to get the size you need.  The sheet always overlaps the mattress by a couple of inches, so you will have a decent seam allowance and some overlap.  I find that it is easier to make a duvet by using the size sheet to fit the bed.  No hemming, cutting, etc.  All you do is sew up three sides, create either a velcro or button closure and you are done!  You do the same for the pillowcases. Measure the existing ones you have and sew the three sides.  Again, I use a sheet, as the one end is already hemmed.  Sew the raw edges and your cases are complete.  Oh, if you want a ruffle without the hassle, get a bed ruffle and sew it to the inside of one of the panels of the duvet cover before you sew it up.  Make sure you check to make sure the ruffles are on the outside before you sew everything up.  Seam rippers are a God send!
