My G3 is very slow, especially on the internet. Will a G5 be any faster? Or does it come down to the speed of the internet where you live? Thanks for answering!

  2. Its the speed of your connection, not the performance of your system.

  3. Several factors come into play such as the processor type and speed, RAM, version of Mac OS, browser, ethernet circuitry, and the Internet service. Think of it as a chain and the weakest link is the fastest it can move data, load a Web page, download a file.

Suppose your old iMac is running OS 9, browsing with Internet Explorer 5.2.1, has 64MB of RAM, 100 base-T ethernet and is using a cable modem with 100 base-T connection. It will be about half as fast on average compared with a G5 iMac running OS 10.4.

My old iBook stepped up a notch in browsing speed when I went from 512MB RAM to 1GB and nothing else changed.
