How much food should you eat carrying twins?

I feel like I'm constantly eating, I eat three meals a day plus snacks in between, but my husband says I'm not eating enough for twins. My Doctor says I'm gaining the right amount of weight. But sometimes I wonder if I am growing at the right rate for twins. Any suggestions?

  1. I am a mother of multiple sets of twins. I used to feel like that too. But as long as you are eating healthy, it doesn't matter how much you eat. you need the nutrients. Good luck and I hope everything goes fine.

  2. I always feel a lot healthier when I follow the brewer diet during pregnancy.  There is one for moms of multiples, maybe it will help.

Remember its not so much about eating "enough" but in making healthy choices (as much as possible with morning sickness and food aversions)

    THE BREWER PREGNANCY DIET CHECKLISTS

To help you implement your Brewer Pregnancy Diet every day of your pregnancy, we’ve devised some simple check lists that you can copy and post on your refrigerator at home, or at your desk at work.

There is a check list for each Plan: Basic, Lacto-Ovo and Vegan, plus a supplemental list for Multiples.

    MULTIPLES

Make one copy of the Multiples Check List for each additional baby you are carrying and post it alongside your choice of Brewer Pregnancy Diet. For example, if you are carrying triplets, you should post your chosen check list, plus two Multiples supplements, for a total of three babies. As you eat throughout the day, be sure you are meeting the requirements on BOTH/ALL check lists.

  3. Listen to your body and your doctor. And not so much the husband. Eat healthly. Lots of fruit and veggies. Take your vitamin every day. Make sure that you get a lot of dairy every day. If the doctor says that you are gaining enough, he is right. They are the first to warn you that you are not eating enough. Remember you only lose so much after delivery. And all the extra weight will be yours to lose after delivery.

  4. guessing that your husband doesn't have any specialist training in gyny or obs, so I'd listen to your doc not him!! lol

i'm only carrying one, but was surprised that i didn't need to eat anything extra until last few weeks, and then only about another 200 cals. I'm guessing that you would need to eat more for twins, but take it easy and listen to your body and your doc, and go for the healthy snacks whenever you can!

    Good luck!

  5. you eat when you are hungry, you cant really eat more then you can handle. if doc says you are fine then listen to that.

  6. If you feel good and your doctor is comfortable with your weight gain then I would not worry.  You don't want to go to the opposite extreme.

With twins, you want to increase your calorie intake by about 600 calories and eat approximately 5 times a day - a few meals and a few snacks.

I am currently 35w 6d pregnant with twins, over the pregnancy, I have gained about 30 lbs.  This may not seem like much for twins (they usually say 45lbs) but I was carrying extra weight going into my pregnancy, my weight gain has been steady, my blood pressure is good and I passed my gestational diabetes test . . . these are the things that are important to my OB.

Good luck and best wishes for a happy & healthy pregnancy!!!
