How much for a basic trip to Europe?

I want to go to Europe in a couple years so I want to start saving. Just curious what a basic first-time trip to Europe would cost on average. I don't want the cheapest of the the cheap hostels, something slightly up from that. But neither do I want to see all of Europe in one trip. Probably just England, France, Holland and Germany for round one. Maybe three weeks total. What sort of thousand dollar figure do you suppose I'm looking at?

If you go in the off season (March usually has some good air fairs), and you fly into countries that are less popular (you can always hop on the train), then maybe around $2k to $3k.

Expect to pay around $2000 -$2500 American Dollars.  That will get you plane tickets, hostel rooms, food and traveling in country with a few extras like sightseeing, shows, museums etc.
