How much for a month in central america?

i'm travelling from Aust, looking at going for a month of dec/ jan. not really sure of places to go, but want ot go to costa rica- which places at best value for money and would it be cheaper to fly to LA first? looking to stay in hostels, would like to learn a bit about the countries- any ideas of things to do? thanks!

Caribbean is cheap if you know how to spend and save the money.

It would cost you around US$500/month a room and calculate 10-20 US$ for muchies a day.
