  1. Autozone has the part for either $40 or $50, depending on quality (valuecraft or duralast). If you're talking about having somebody do it for you will usually be more. Labor shouldn't run more than an hour tops.

    Easy to do yourself whether you have the 351 or 400. Here's the procedure, if you're moderately handy and have basic tools;

    Check your cable connections first. Take the Negative off the battery first, and put it on last, and check both ends of all 3 main cables. If your battery has a good charge, cables are clean, and the starter relay clicks when you try it, probably is the starter if it don't turn then. Those pole shoe starters need plenty of voltage though.

  2. You can check the price many places. Probably not too much for that, but check relay and cables before purchase.

  3. One place you can use to do price checking on car repairs is on Driverside.com - you can drill down to specific cars cause I think the price will change based on the car. They are still in beta but they have a ton of data on what car parts and repairs should cost. I used them for my last repair.  Wow, I just realized you said 1974 - I don't know if they have data for cars that old.  Wow - I remember that car - a walk down memory lane.

  4. first off... which motor???

    if you do it your self, around $40 bucks.

    couple things to look into though, could be soleniod, or bad cable!

    take the old one out, and take it to autozone or advanced, they can bench test these! if the starter is good, solenoids cost around $12-24bucks, cables the few bucks too!!
