How much for a service in restaurants in London?????

Soon I'm going to London. That's gonna be my first visit. Probably we will visit 3 to 4 restaurants and I already check the prices for the meals. But here is the key question how much I have to pay for the service. I know it depends how happy we will be but there should be general rule about that. Thank You for the answer!!!!!!!

Service varies from restaurant to restaurant.  Typically in London you should look at leaving 12.5 % of the total bill if you feel the service has been good (more if it has been great).  Some restaurant will add this to the bill automatically (as an optional charge) check to make sure the staff receive the money.

Check the menu's when you get there as they will often tell you how much service is likely to be and whether it will be included.  Ranges from 10 -  18% (mostly 10 - 12.5%).

Please only tip if you feel that the service was really great. when the waiter has made your dining experience one tha you will remember for all the right reasons .  

I am one of those idiots who is generous  to the point of madness, but theres been a few occasions when not only have I not tipped but have deducted more than half what the menu stated for poor food and slovenly service  but as i imagine most respondents will say the waiter will be very happy with 10% (do you get tipped at work ??)

I always go with around 10%. Just make sure that when you receive the bill, that service charge has not already been included, leading you to inadvertently pay twice. Of course, if you are not happy with service then do not leave a tip.

If you eat IN a restaurant, food stand, or cafe they charge you 17.5% VAT which is value added tax.  In general, they will also include service - it will say on the bottom of the menu below the VAT notice.

It is only Americans who give 15-20% on top of the already high prices because of the tipping culture.  In America, most wait-staff earns min. wage + tips, so their whole life is based on service recognition.  In most countries in Europe, the min wage is higher and most food places pay more of an average rate.  With medical coverage by the government, the wait-staff relies less on tips.  In fact, unless it is a terrific meal with amazing service, you really do not need to leave a tip.  I know this sounds weird but it is standard all over Europe.  At a Pub (or Bar) you only tip if you have been talking the bar-keep's ear off for hours.

You never have to feel shy about asking.  They get it all the time.

I have always tipped 10%, (only if they were good) but i was out with a well off friend a few years ago and they tipped 20%! Apparently its more polite than 10% I think its rubbish!

as a former waiter in the UK, service is usually included and only tip if you want to, if you had exceptional service and if the waiter went out of their way to help you. in the uk we don't give out tips willy nilly, why should you tip if you had terrible service or even average service, its not reall teaching the waiters anything. personaly i think its so expensive in the uk and the minmum wage is so high, compared to america, there is no need to pay tips.

Normally about 10% service, BUT only if you think it's worth it. Service is often added to the bill so look out for that, it can be up to 15%!! Which for a coffee is a lot!
