national rail enquiries will tell you the cost of regular tickets.  If you can book a year ahead on the train driver's birthday and a day with no A in it you will get the one cheap ticket on the trai, but I have never managed to do that.

It depends on a lot of factors, time of day, day of travel and return or single journey, class of travel, etc.  Best thing is make sure you know what dates you are travelling and what time, then go to your local station and ask the clerks there, they can look info up in minutes to see if cheap tickets are availiable and if the price is right, sell them to you as well.

Dont forget to book as far in advance as possible for a good deal.
