i have a 1 yr old and i am still happily breastfeeding him but have started him on some formula feeds as i think my milk isnt satisfying him enough. ive read that he should be having approx 3x 8 oz a day but since i am still breastfeeding him i dont know how much he is getting. at the moment ive been breastfeeding him after each meal (3 meals) and then he gets 3x 100ml (approx 3 1/2 oz) inbetween those breastfeed and naps..here is my schedule..

breakfast at about 7am

breastfeed soon after breakfast

100ml formula (he sometimes drinks it all) before nap at 10am

lunch at about 11.30-12

breastfeed soon after lunch

100ml formula mid afternoon (he usually only has 1 nap a day now so i give him that formula mid afternoon to get him through to dinnertime)

dinner at 5.30

100ml of formula after bath and then finish off with breastfeed for bed.

and inbetween all this he has snacks!!

i feel like he has SO much! what do you think? does anyone else still breastfeed & formula like me?

  1. Ask your pediatrician. The formula should be gone at one.

  2. There is no set pattern or right or wrong! Simply put: Children will drink when they're thirsty! Whether that be formula, breastmilk, juice or cows milk!

Well done on still giving breastmilk. My daughter BF about 5 to 7 times a day and drinks milk and water too (when I'm at work its less BF and more cows milk or water obviously)

I think it would be ok for you now to drop the formula and switch to offering normal (cows) milk instead and as for the breastfeeding, well, let him choose. If he wants it give it but if he's ok with normal milk then thats fine too.

Just watch his snacks! I've learn't from (painful) experience that it is best to limit eating to breakfast, lunch and dinner with juice and treats offered at those times as its better for the teeth. Water and any-milk in-between is just fine!

  3. Yes i agree a one year old needs to be drinking whole milk.  Talk to your dr.  Plus lots of food too.  Fruits,  veggies, carbs, protein.  Growing kids need a lot at this age, a variety.

  4. at one year old he should be drinking whole milk
