I have a 11 week old baby boy that I am breastfeeding and supplementing with formula, the reason that I am giving formula as well as breastfeeding is because after he breastfeeds on both breast he sometimes acts as though he is still hungry , like sucking on his hands. After he has been breastfed I give him 2 oz's of formula and he is satisfied. What I would like to know is when he hasn't breast fed and is only getting formula how much should I give him? He is 11 weeks old and weighs 14 pounds. Last night he had breastfed and 30 minutes later he was hungry again and since I had company I made him a 2oz bottle and he was still hungry after he ate that so I gave him 2 more ounces and then he was full. Basically I just want to know how many ounces should I give him when I am just feeding formula and no breast milk. Also what is the absolute best formula available? Right now he is getting Enfamil LIPIL and seems very happy with it, it is what was suggested to me by his Dr.

Thanks for reading I know its long! LOL

This is my first baby so I am "inexperienced"

  1. feed him till hes full no set amount as long as hes gaining weight and is satifyed

  2. You do what my mom always said. Feed that baby when he's hungry. If he is not satisfied, give him a little bit more. There's no real 2 ounce, four ounce, limits. He's just hungry, so feed him!

Also, when my babies were very young, they got to a point where formula alone didn't satisfy them. Yes, I gave them very thinly mixed cereal in their bottles, and that helped a lot. My mom told me to do that too...and she had nine kids, so I'm pretty sure she knew what she was talking about.

I'd get that baby a full sized bottle and feed him until he's full and put the remainder of the bottle, if there is a good bit left, in the fridge for later. You'll know when he's full. Sometimes they are just hungrier than others; just like adults. Sometimes you want a whole turkey dinner with the trimmings; sometimes you just want a salad, don't you? Babies are the same way. There's no set amount; sometimes, if they've been out in the air or something, they are just hungrier.

    Hope this helped.

  3. He should be drinking 4 oz all together. I used to pump mmy milk and give my daughter 2 oz of my milk and the 2 oz of formula. And they should be eating every 2 to 3 hours.

  4. on occassions where he doesnt breastfeed, make up a 6 oz bottle and see how much of it he eats, after a few times of 6 oz bottles youll know whetherr he needs a 4 or 6 or 8 even

    thats what i did anyways

  5. It's true, there is no perfect amount, as long as he is gaining weight like he should. Also monitor his pees and poops.  As long as he is dirtying enough diapers then he is getting enough.  I disagree with adding cereal to his bottle, it can lead to childhood obesity.  The reason he will go through stages of eating more often is because babys go through growth spurts and sometimes require more feedings.  This is normal.  Just feed him when he's hungry.  Enfamil Lipil is perfectly fine.  It offers everything other formulas do.  Of course breastmilk is best, but as long as he does good with Enfamil I wouldn't change it.  If you have concerns always ask your pediatrician.
