Auto manufacturers most likely design fuel tanks to hold enough fuel for a target range base don the motors fuel consumpsion.

I would say that 15 gallons is sufficient for a 4 cyclinder

and 35 or maybe 40 gallons may be acceptable for an extremely powerfull large displacement motor

And everything in between.
