I drive a 2002 camry le. Probably get around 30 mpg in the highway. It's almost exactly 2200 miles from atl to la. Given that it's about 3 bucks/gallon in the US....

I did the math, but it was oddly cheaper than i expected. I'm sure I'm missing something essential. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. Don't trust the exact number you got you will always need a bit more based on conditions. But I would say the number you got by doing the math is probably a very good estimate and make sure you have that much plus a little more.

  2. I get about $220

  4. Figure in gallons of tank. I come up with an estimate of a little over $400 there and back  if you filled up 12 times on a 12 gallon tank at $3 per gallon to travel 2200 miles. I hope you factor in extra though.

  5. with the numbers you gave it will cost around $219 each way.   I drove from CA to NY in a camry and I spent around $260.

  6. It will be around $250 or so.

What you are missing is the wear and tear on your car, which is actually a lot more in financial terms.  Gas is only a small component of the total cost of driving.

  7. Nope... Sounds like you've got it about right.

2200 miles divided by 30 miles per gallon equals 73.34 gallons of gasoline, times $3 per gallon equals around $220. (Double that number for a round-trip.)

The only thing is that as you drive farther West, gasoline prices will go up a bit, and your mileage will go down a bit as you climb over the mountains, so I would figure $3.50 per gallon for the whole trip, or around $260 each way.  This should give you a small cash reserve.
