  1. Good answer Ken.  I found a government  Energy Commision website posted May 8, 2008, and they posted 51.8% of each barrell of crude oil is converted into gasoline. 12.3% is converted into jet fuel.  The web page has an easy to read summary of items produced from each barrel of crude oil.

  2. A barrell of crude is 40 gallons. Gasoline is actually 28 different compounds. There are 40 different formulations of gasoline in USA. The Enviromental authorities require different formulations for specific areas and times of year. The last time I talked with a chemist at an oil refinery they were producing a little over 50% of their crude into gasoline, but this can change dramatically due to demand, how the refinery is configered and on and on. It is more efficent to produce a variety of products.
