Question:

How much greenhouse gas is emitted by hot air balloons? Do you go for hot air balloon rides?

My boyfriend said that he wants to take me up in the air over the pastures in our community. I don't know whether we should do this. I mean, wouldn't we be contributing to global warming?

I'm really wondering if we should do this. Does anyone here know the ratio of the greenhouse gases emitted by burning the fuel for a hot air ballon ride as opposed to the total amount of greenhouse gases that are produced when he takes me for a ride in his convertible?

He even said that he thinks we should get married in a hot air balloon, but it frightens me, because I am worried about the carbon footprint that we would leave behind us when we take our wedding vows.

What should I tell him?

  1. Hot air balloons burn liquefied petroleum gas, a form of natural gas. Of the the big three fossil fuels, coal, oil, and natural gas, gas has the lowest carbon content and makes the smallest contribution to global warming. So a balloon flight is quite clean.

  2. Just do it!

It's probably a once or once in a while experience.

I probably wouldn't ever do it because I'm freaked out.  You are in a basket so many feet above.  I would think I would break through of fall over the edge or the balloon would pop.

    BUT GO FOR IT!

  3. Boy those first three were having anger issues.

Take your ride.  I did it years ago. The impact of burning a few gallons of propane will not be as bad as all the cars that  your guests drive to your wedding will. You can reduce your carbon footprint by easier means. Try to drive a lot less. Plan your trips to town very carefully, and get as much done in one trip as you can. Just reducing your car use by 25%,you'll be doing a lot!

  4. Want to reduce your carbon footprints?Move into a cave like bats.As in dingbat.

Oh and to answer your q;tell him to start looking for a new girlfriend.(The warranty is expiring on the current model.)

  5. Don't go! You'll cause the polar ice cap to melt. Don't drive a car, heat your house, cook your food, take a hot shower, go camping, use electricity, rub your hands together and for heavens sake turn your computer off.

  6. I'll let you decide on the site of your marriage. Weddings leave a big carbon footprint. All the driving to and fro, the parties, catering, etc. And the gifts. Expensive gifts need be wrapped in oil wasting styrofoam and plastic. Then jetting off to that romantic honeymoon.

Do it! Get married, Have fun. But plant lots of trees. Especially the ones that absorb carbon dioxide. Feel less guilty.

  7. Have you ever tried to take a hot air balloon ride without the hot air?

    I suggest you try.

  8. A completely insignificant amount of global warming is caused by hot air balloons.

If you don't want to do this, don't do it.  But global warming is not an excuse.

Buy one compact fluorescent and you've more than compensated.
