I'd love to get one, but I want to make sure I'd have the time for the extra grooming.

  1. I had an abyssinian(soo cute!) and I only brushed them every once and a while. Just a soft brush that you can pick up at a pet store will do, and just do it whenever you want! They shed a bit during the summer, so maybe you could brush them during that time to help with the shedding.

Also, I noticed that you said you'd like to get ONE. Please, don't just get one Guinea Pig. My parents were reluctant about letting me get two, but honestly, it doesn't cost much more at all. Your piggies will love you just as much as they would if they were an only pig, but when you're not there, they will have a buddy to groom them and play with them!

  2. not much more than a short haired one.  their coats tend to be more wirery and not as soft.  but i do love the abyssinian ones!  i have a white and red one and a grey one.  they only get brushed because they and i enjoy doing it.

i agree with the other poster.  guinea pigs do better and are happier when in pairs.  best to find a bonded pair.  your pigs will be happier and love you for the friend.

  3. I currently own an Abyssinian guinea pig, and she needs little-to no grooming at all. I do however, occasionally brush her.!

  4. little to none

  5. Pretty much none - their fur is pretty, but it's also low-maintenance.

When you get into the long-haired pigs, though, they need a lot of grooming - texels, Shelties, etc. "Show pigs" keep their hair tied up or in curlers most of the time because otherwise they get tangled and dirty. I have one long-haired pig and I have to bathe her frequently, brush her daily, and keep her trimmed as needed.
