  1. Check out this site....some info here...

  2. Eastern Gama grass grass grown in SE Nebraska will produce as much as 10 tons per acre with heavy fertilization.  I have met ranchers from Texas who claim that Bermuda grass will produce 10 ton per acre South of the Mason Dixon line.

Both of these are expensive to establish and are very input intensive beyond the "point of diminishing returns".  Depending on what part of the country you are talking about, and your needs for nutrition, there are lots of good options out there.

  3. There are many variables to this question. Take a look at Iowa, for example, they get (usually...hopefully) the perfect amount of rain, sun, ect. They have excellent soil and therefore produce very substantial amounts (for their area). Travel westward, to SW North Dakota - usually dry, hot, and soil is so-so. Depending on the year, anywhere from 2 ton/acre or less. Also depends on grass (what kind it is) or alfalfa or if it's a mixture. Finally, will a person be able to get a second cutting on that land? If so, that boosts bale total. That evens out to anywhere from 150 to 400 large, round bales - hopefully, on good land, in a good year.

  4. we would cut our hay about 4 times a year depending on weather and produce 8 to 10 tons per year per acre depending on weather

  5. What kind of hay? grass hay a good crop maybe 1 1/2 tons per A where alfalfa and like type hays may yeald up to 4 tons per A. and some types of hay may grow even more per A. Also what part of the country are you talking about. In one are 2 tons maybe a good crop but the same hay grown someplace else 2 tons would be considered a very poor crop

  6. That depends entirely on the regoin and rainfall. Many good ares can recieve 8 ton in 3 cuts . Some others wouldn't get one ton in a whole season.

  7. I live in Illinois and lazydaysranch is correct for this area

  8. If your raising alfalfa on good soil with the appropriate pH and fertilization levels, you should receive 4 cuttings per season, 5-8 tons per acre.  I am in central Illinois.  Going north you may only receive 3 cuttings, 4-6 tons per acre.  In the warm southerly climate such as Arizona, you may receive upwards of 9 cuttings per season.    Grass and clover mixes you may receive 3-5 tons per acre.  Good management practices will make a big difference.
