Question:

How much heating oil will this house consume?

Have found a good rental deal on an older house here in central VA (aprox. 4000 Heating Degree Days). Problem is, it has an oil furnace that heats the house by means of steam radiators. The furnace also provides the hot water. The furnace is almost ten years old, the house is about 70 years old. It's a two story brick, about 2000 SF.

Does anybody have a guess as to the aproximate amount of oil this house will consume?

  1. It'll be impossible for anyone here to answer this.

It depends on the houses' fenestration rating. (basically-how "tight" its' envelope is) or how fast it cools off in cold weather.

The house is 70 years old, so there is a history to how much oil it consumes.

Find out who has routinely delivered oil to that address, call and ask them, I bet they can give you a close estimate.

Of course it will vary, as the previous renters may have liked to keep the thermostat at 80, or used more hot water, etc. etc.
