  1. I'm in 9th grade now, we get an hour a subject a week so about 15 hours a week.

And we get a whole lot of detentions!20 minutes per piece of equipment forgotten.

You should complain to the head teacher that really is out of order for a 4th grader!

  2. I know from grade 6-12 you have major homework every night, almost in every class.

My sister, who is in grade 1, has one or two sheets of homework, two nights a week.

That's the way school is, sorry.

I do not agree with not having play-time and a snack because of a few kids but life is unfair.

  3. Sounds like a tough class and/or strict teacher.

Homework:  My students get 10 minutes per grade in addition to 20 minutes of reading either with a parent of by themselves. So for fourth grade that would average about 60 minutes - or 1 hour. Some kids work slowly so perhaps you can break that time up and do some homework before dinner and finish it up after dinner.  By 4th grade though, expectations are that students attention is longer and there is much more"content" covered with lots of writing.  I also know some kids are perfectionists - is your son one of them?  Perhaps talk to the teacher gently and just ask if it's normal for them to do homework for 2 hours every night?

  4. Sometimes it helps if you switch to a smaller school or have him switch teachers.

  5. Have him explain what is going on.   Or you can go and talk to the teacher.  Is he a slacker.  Is he stuggling with something

  6. My 3rd grade daughter has about 45 minutes worth of homework Monday thru Thursday night.  On top of that she has to read a chapter book each week and study for 3 tests.  It takes her about 1hr and 45 minutes each night to do it all.  I was told 10 mins for each grade level (including Kindergarten) is appropriate for homework.  So for 4th grade he should have 50 mins or so of homework. It isn't that way for my daughter though.

  7. I'm in my Senior year of high school and we do procrastinate when we do our homework. If I did it late, I stayed up later to finish it and not get as much sleep. I would say it shouldn't take longer than 3 or 4 hours if he takes breaks, especially in 4th grade! Ask any teacher and they'll say less than two hours.

  8. I really don't know....Mine just started his first day of 3rd grade today.

  9. My son gets tons of homework and he's in the 4th grade too.  I've come to realize that the teacher has put the responsibility of teaching on me.  I am the one that spends hours nightly teaching what should've already been taught and then helping with homework.

I am thinking about sitting in one day and seeing exactly what goes on in those classrooms.  I didn't have anywhere near as much homework as they do today.

  10. wheni was in the 9th grade i had homework up to four hours a night non stop 10th it slowed down to about 3 hours a night and 11th hardly any and when i did get homework it was 5 to 6 hours a night and all kinds of studing now my senior year which is this year and i just started yesterday i had tons of homework it took me about 5 hours to complete all of it and it was all do the next day...........so i know what u mean working all day then come home and work long hours my cousin though was in the 4th grade and had about an hour of home work... i would talk to the teacher it is crazy that a 4th grader is getting 2 hours worth of work

  11. He's in 4th grade now, he is going to have more work the higher grades he gets into.  Time he learned how to budget his time better.  As far as homework, my 11 year old comes home with history, math and english homework.  (she skipped a couple of grades in elementary school and is in highschool), as soon as she gets home from school she begins doing her homework.  My 8 year old usually has spelling/english to work on along with social studies and works on it at afterschool care, my 5 year old usually has spelling to do as well as math problems and she too does them in the afterschool care.  My 11 year old has stayed up until about 10:00pm to finish her work before but it doesn't happen all of the time.  My kids aren't interested in too much television or computer time/games and have been taught how to budget their time.

  12. If I were you I would talk to some of the other parents then go to the principle and take a stand, I am so disgusted with our school systems and the amount of work they send home, I think that some teachers just don't want to work with the children so they send the work home.. They don't take into account that most family's both parents have to work and in some cases children unfortunately have bad home life's what is the system coming too? Sorry I have a 15 year old sister who has a minimum of 4 hours a day of home work gggrrrrrrr

  13. That sounds like a tough 4th grade teacher! But in Middle school we had a class be threatened to write the expectation 100 times! This year in 7th grade we have anywhere from 1-3 hours of homework a night!

  14. mine daughter 5th grade NO homework NONE i mean it

    ps. yet LOL

  15. AGES REALLY LONG he has like 5 peices of homework to do

  16. That's the way it is. :( In seventh grade last year I had homework for the very least three hours straight without breaks. It sucked balls. :( But I hope this year will be better.
