Question:

How much horn is safe to trim?

When my goat was young she caught her horn in a fence and broke most of it off at the base of her scull. I had to take her to the vet to have the rest removed, however, now 3 years later it has grown back and almost into her scull! I keep thinking, it won't grow much further, it'll stop, but it hasn't. I can barely fit my pinkie finger between the tip of her horn and her scull and it needs to be cut ASAP. I know if you cut too short it will begin to bleed just like the hooves but I don't know how far to go. If anyone with EXPERIENCE has any suggestions please let me know.

  1. Go back to the vet and have him/her remove it. My dad raises boar goats and burns them off as babies and they never grew back. He never trims them He has some goat with horns but never had that problem I called him and he said theres a major blood vein and not to trim it or cut or file it it could bleed to death! Sorry I cant help but I would try to find a vet!

  2. If you want to be sure not to hit any of the blood vessels the best thing to do is only trim off an inch a month. If you feel you need to trim more than that, you should consult a vet as each goat is different.
