Question:

How much in advance should you book your flight to get the cheapest air fare?

I am traveling to NJ from GA for a family reunion. I need to be in NJ no later than Thursday, July 31. I was going to book my flight today (July 16) because I was told that most airlines require a two week advance booking for the best fares, also I have found that if you travel on Wedsnesdays the fares are cheaper. However, someone told me that most airlines have sales on Thursdays. However, that would only give me a 13 day advance booking. I have also been told that some airlines now only require a 7 to 10 day advance booking for the best fares. I'm getting a little confused with so much information. Also, could you supply some good web sites to find discount airfares. So far, cheapo-air seems to be the best one. Thanks.

  1. You will usually get the cheapest fares when you purchase 21 days or more in advance. Most airlines don't have sales any particular day of the week, so dont listen to that.  If you TRAVEL on a Tues or Weds your flight will generally be cheaper, but I really havent noticed a day of the week to purchase to get cheapest flights.  There is a rumour that a lot of people have latched onto that says to book your flight on Weds just after midnight (which would have been this morning), but thats rubbish.  Cheap flights can be found any day of the week, any time of day, its just a matter of catching them.

  2. Cheapoair has at best lukewarm reviews on other sites, things like doublecharges, etc.

Right now, airfares are pretty much a gamble.  Since you have a specific date, I would book early, to insure availability.  The last thing you want is to wait too long and not have a seat to purchase.  Generally speaking, you will do better outside the 14 day window.  The airlines are not offering a lot of sales right now, especially on main routes.

I would use kayak.com and book direct with the airline website from that.  Your other option is Priceline (if you don't care what airline).
