Question:

How much income can you have before claiming it on taxes?

I know it is a small amount but uncertain of how much. I live in Pa and was curios as I sometimes do home care that pays cash. Thanks!!

  2. Depends upon your filing status and the source of the income.  See IRS Pub 501 for a full discussion on filing requirements.  That's for Federal income taxes.  For PA income taxes, it's $33.00.  That's right, $33.00.

    Here are some quick 2008 numbers for Federal, assuming that you are not a dependent, and your filing status is Single:

    Wages from employment subject to withholding:  $8,950.00.

    Self-employment:  $400

  3. If you are self-employed, it is $400 for the entire year.

    Remember, this limit applies to all of your self-employment income and not each individual job.

    If you are already over the filing require due to another job, ALL additional income must be reported.

  4. Bostonian and Wayne give correct info for federal.  And if you are already required to file a return for any reason, like other income, then the side income must be reported from the first dollar.

    In PA, if you have income over $33, you are required to file a state return. Yes, that's right, thirty three dollars.
