1. i agree with Prairie Girl diabetes is a very serious disease and you should ask your doctor about any concerns you have regarding your meds.

  2. Your weight issues should not be confused with your diabetic condition under no circumstances should you use your insulin to control weight.

Unfortunately for diabetics it is common for weight loss or gain to take place as the insulin dosage is changed this is a natural occurrence of the bodies system it is a very complicated process and the best way for you to understand it is to study as much information as you can get hold of! not junk info from friends or people with good intention you need to go and study some health manuals and books such as, Mosby's Medical and Nursing Dictionary, and other quality books such as the Merck Manual, Davidson's Principles & Practice of Medicine, and also speek with your doctors and professors.

In short if you can get your dosages right and you eat correctly and you do regular exersice your body will return to its normal metabolic rate even with diabetes!

Look out for food combinations too (opposites) we should be more aware of the foods we mix together when eating as our bodies release different chemicals and acids and alkaline to help with food digestion. Now if we eat meat and salad in the same meal our bodies secrete opposing chemicals to digest the food and we have a problem.

How's this say we eat a hearty baked dinner then we have some nice fruit and icecream for desserts the meat in our meal takes anywhere up to 6 hours plus to digest in our stomoche acids (acids released for meat digestio) and the fruit can take as little as 2 hours to digest and alkaline is seceted for digestion and to complicate this further the meat slows the fruit down in the digestive tract and the fruit then starts to fament in your body and again there is a digestive problem.

Check out the medical information as much as you can and DONT USE YOUR INSULIN FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE THAN TO TREAT YOUR DIABETES good luck

  3. Diabetes is a very serious disease. It causes people to lose their sight & their limbs, it causes heart attacks, and kidney failure. Please don't ask people on here to give you advice about taking insulin. That should be done only by your doctor. If there are any questions you have concerning your condition make an appointment and go in and talk to your doctor about it.

  4. supposedly, not taking insulin to lose weight is called diabulimia. so i guess thats not good xD sorry im kind of useless, i'm 16 too, and was just diagnosed 8 months ago so i'm still learning as well.

  5. You need to call your doctor or your diabetes educator to get the answer to this question.

  6. Ignore any product endorsements or "you should do this" followed by some ridiculous sounding far fetched advice.

What you need to do is quite simple. Talk to your physician, or ask your school's health nurse to help you out. Incidentally...next month, make him/her one of your best friends in school among the staff. With the school nurse on your side, and aware of your medical issues, (s)he can be a great aide in your fight against diabetes.

As for dosing...do NOT dose to gain/loose weight. That can lead to complications that can be annoying to life threatening! Your doctor, or the school nurse can help you with correct dosages and such. Typically the dosing is in direct relation to the blood sugar levels in your body.

If you can't wait here's a link to a google search...most of them seem to have most of the info you'll need!

    Good Luck!

  7. You need to keep a food log and test frequently after eating to figure out how many units it takes to counteract how many grams of carbohydrated.

Me?? I take 2 units per 15 grams of carb. But that is me!! I take 25 units of Lantus for my basal.

I keep my grams of carb to about 30 per meal. This way it only takes a maximum of 4 units, but sometimes that is too much also.

Testing frequently and taking just barely enough hum to cover the carbs will prevent the weight gain.

You have to go talk to the doctor or the CDE to figure this one out for yourself. But do be keeping a tight complete log of your Foods, Insulin, testing, and exercising. Don't cheat on the log!!! It won't help you!

Be honest and measure your food for a while so you begin to know exactly what you are eating. Places on line like http://www.nutritiondata.com and http://www.sparkpeople.com have recipe and menu places for you to fill in and they tell you how many grams of carb and other nutrients are in your food.

Keeping the grams of carb to a minimum keeps us from injecting too much insulin. Insulin turns food to fat and packs it on our bods. It is very very hard to get back off.

So you would be wise to go with the 30 grams of carb and inject only for that much.

  8. First of all your dosage should be managed by a dr.Insulin is not something you should not play around with, too much or too little can have bad affects.Try to follow a proper diet and you will do fine controlling you weight.
