the writing is readable and well it has an average amount of scratches considering its age and has a darker shade on the back. And also is this coin made of silver? im guesing it is because all quarters below 1964 were silver.

one more thing. When i say how much is it worth i mean like how much would people like collectors pay for this kind of coin it is very rare and hard to see

  1. Yours is probably a Philadelphia quarter.  The "M"  is actually the initial of the designer, Hermon A. MacNeil; the mint mark, if there is one, would be slightly to the left of Liberty's right foot, just to the right of the bottom star.  With silver at $16.60 an ounce, the metal value is about $3.00.  A dealer would probably sell yours in "OK" condition for between $5 and $14, but would most likely buy it from you for much less.  The Phila Mint made more than 6 million of them that year, so it's not all that rare, but it IS older than my mother, so it's pretty old!
