I am wondering how much is normal for groceries each week? I have myself and my husband as well as two children. They both eat a large amount. I typically spend $100-$150 a week and that includes most everything I need. Is that a large amount?

  1. No.  You are doing good.  My daughter, and hubby, have three boys, 10, 12 and 14, who eat alot.  She spends between $150 & $200 a week.  So, you're in the range, but don't forget to cut out those coupons.  They are worth the price of the newspaper.  Two papers is double savings.

  2. Its pretty decent as long as you are spending it right, on healthy things refrain from frozen foods and other junk foods specially if you have children You mite be able to shave this amount a bit more if you pay more attention to what you children are putting in the shopping cart.

  3. Swanson TV dinners are less than $1 each so, that takes care of dinner

Campbell's soup is how much a can?

    That takes care of lunch.

A big cylinder of Quaker Oats is?

Add a little milk and sugar, and its a CHEAP breakfast.

Potato soup is easy and cheap to make.

Buying prepackaged, heat and eat, etc foods is what runs up the food bill.

As does JUNK food and soda pop, beer etc.

  4. No that is normal for a family of your size...my mom and dad had five kids living at home (4 of theirs and my cousin) and she spends about 550 a month...so that's fine I would say what you are spending.

If you want to save money you could always stop buying treat type foods...

    Good luck...

  5. No, it's average.  It can be a struggle to keep food costs below $100 per week for a family, especially if you choose organic or convenience foods.

One thing you can do is avoid convenience or name brand foods and buy in bulk whenever possible.  Always shop from a list, and check grocery store ads for items on sale.

  6. You're doing well, actually.

The USDA shows these averages for a family of four:

    Low-cost: $588.90 - $699.10

    Moderate-cost: $721.60 - 869.50

    Liberal-cost: $894.80 - 1,057.40
