  1. As K-9 used to say on "Doctor Who", "insufficient data for meaningful answer!". As with all British rail ticketing questions, apart from where you're travelling between, we need to know:

    1. Standard or first class? We'll assume standard...

    2. How old are you?

    3. Do you have a Railcard?

    4. How far in advance of your journey are you buying your ticket? If you just go to Glasgow Central and want to buy a ticket for immediate travel, it may well cost a fortune, but if you buy a week or two in advance and commit to travelling on particular trains, you can save a lot of money.

    5. Single or  return? Return tickets may not cost much more than a single.

In the case of Glasgow to Cambridge (normal routing is Glasgow - Birmingham, Birmingham - Cambridge):

    Adult fares, standard class:

Open single (travel on any train): £124 or £142.50

    Open return: £248 or £285

Saver single (restricted availability): £100.80 or £118.20.

    Saver return: £101.80 or £119.20

34% discount off most fares with a Railcard.
