How much is an alto saxophone mouthpiece?

what quality are you wanting. i would suggest that if you intend to stay playing your instrament for a long time - INVEST in a good one!!! and DONT use those metal ligatures

a very nice mouth piece will run you about $60-85 but it is a very wise investment because it really does make a difference in the sound you create.

try one like a van doren

if on the other hand you are just starting out and dont know if you will stick with it - go for one in the $40 dollar range. good but not great.

a poor (read that cheap) quaility mouth piece will be very discouraging as you wont ever get the best sound you are capable of and you will get frustrated

mouth pieces can go for much more but as a student you probably should even think about that yet

HI Katherine,

There are a variety of prices for alto saxophone mouthpieces...  from cheap for a cheap quality mouthpiece... to pretty expensive for a nice quality mouthpiece.   But what you really need to do, is get a phone call or email into your band director before you buy one.   I find that band     directors have their preference so even if you just go out and get a mouthpiece,  if it is not what the director would like you to have....  he will make you go back and get another one and the music store will not let you take back a mouthpiece for sanitary reasons.  

It would be best not to throw away good money if the band director is going to expect a certain mouthpiece and you would not want to get the wrong one.    The mouthpiece he will suggest will be the best one for the best tone for all of the saxophones in the band.  You really need to take his advice...  as he is the one you are going to have to face.
