How much is an intro surfboard gonna run me?

i looked around on jackssurfboards.com and the cheapest one i found that didn't look like a piece of c**p was $500. where is this on the price scale for boards?

My first board was a Bic Funboard 7'6" like the first poster. It's a great board because like she said, it's virtually indestructable! I purchased mine for $250 from a girl who had used it twice was moving to Boston and wouldn't be surfing much. I talked her down from $300 and I think the MSRP on the board was $320 at the time.

Check your local craigslist and eBay for local sales. Sometimes shops will drop overflow on eBay and if you find a shop in your area you can easily go check it out and pick it up. Of course, never committ to buying anytihg without seeing it first!!!

Much like a good bike, you should get a board from your local surf shop. By establishing your relationship with them they will be able to cater to your needs as you grow and advance inthe sport. If you go in and tell them what you're looking for and what you'd like to spend they can suggest some boards for you and let you see them.

Also, scout yardsales and the want ads in your local newspaper. Every now and then a 50-something family man or someone who's moving decides to let go of his board for a good price.

If you are brand new to the sport I'd suggest a Bic board which made of Epoxy and it is pretty much indestructable, and yes it is made by the same company of Bic pens, lighters, etc. The height of the board depends on your size but many people suggest using a mid-size board, between 6 and 8 feet. Again it depends on your size. I have a 7'9" Bic which cost me $320.00 which is pretty cheap for a brand new board. Of course epoxy will not compare to a fiberglass board but to start off with, it is great! Check out your nearest surf shop and see if they have any Bic's available. Buying a board online is pretty crazy unless your willing to spend over $100 for shipping. Most surf shops can order the board you want to their shop for free, so talk to them and see what they can do for you! Good luck!!

$500 is a good price for a custom shop board.  For those in my surf classes I don't advise buying an expensive board as a first intro board.  I also don't advise buying a board that is too small for you to learn on, or one that won't work well in the conditions where you surf.  The market is currently flooded with inexpensive machine shaped boards made in China that occasionally have decent designs.  I suggest you look at the quality boards at your local shops and also at the designs from the imported boards on websites like Isle.  Some shops sell these boards as well.  You might not have a high resale value, but at least you won't pay much up front and will be able to learn on a responsive board.

Buy a used board for your first one.  Chances are, you are going to beat it up.  Your local craigslist or classifieds are always a good place to start.

Just look around craigslist.org for cheap boards.  You can find beaters as cheap as $50 and decent boards for <$200.  Don't bother with the shops, you're paying for overhead.  If you are just starting out, don't spend more than $250-300 on your first board.  You're just learning so you'll never know the difference between a $200 board and a $900 board.

$500 is the standard price for off the rack shortboards.  Add $150-250 for longboards.
