Gas prices here in America have just reached an average of $4 a gallon. How much is gas (liter or gallon) in other countries? Are Americans paying a greater price for gas than the rest of the world?

  1. Does it matter what the gas price is in other countries unless you live there.

  2. In Australia we pay $1.39-$1.60 per litre depending on the day of the week (Tuesdays is cheapest, Monday most expensive after the weekend) and the area you are in.

    That's about $1.33 - $1.53US

x 3.8 for US gallons (different to UK gallons)

means we're paying $5.05 - $5.80 US per US gallon.

BTW that's for unleaded petrol at the petrol station i.e. retail.

Not sure if you're talking retail?

  3. back in the day (20-25 years ago) i remember going to canada and paying the same per liter as the US was paying per gallon (ie 4x as much).  last summer we went to wales and paid the equivalent of $8/gallon.

so i think other countries are paying much more, and always have.

  4. Most recent list I can find says:-

    Highest prices in the world

    Norway $8.73

    United Kingdom $8.38

    Netherlands $8.37

    Monaco $8.31

    Iceland $8.28

    Belgium $8.22

    France $8.04

    Germany $7.86

    Portugal $7.84

    Italy $7.73

    Lowest prices in the world

    Venezuela $0.12

    Iran $0.40

    Saudi Arabia $0.45

    Libya $0.50

    Swazliand $0.54

    Qatar $0.73

    Bahrain $0.81

    Egypt $0.89

    Kuwait $0.90

    Seychelles $0.98

But that was published around 5 weeks ago, and was the result of a survey conducted between 3/19 and 4/1.

It might be reasonable to assume that they have seen the same % increase as us here in the States.

  5. To what other people have said,  I would add:

The United States has  the lowest gas prices of any non oil exporting country.

And in Europe, as a result of higher gas prices,  people drive more gas efficient cars,  contribute less to global warming,  have good public transportation,  and don't run  big budget deficits in order pay for a giant military to insure a steady supply of the stuff - plus they can afford Universal Health Care.

So,  if they can have $8 per gallon gas in Europe, why can't we have it here?

  6. Most nations are metric, so we're talking liters.

I think the most expensive is in the Euro Zone, around $11/gallon (according to my friend in the USAF).

I think the cheapest is Iran, where subsidies last year had the price at around $0.28/gallon. Bear in mind, that subsidy had to end (and was met with rioting). The irony is that Iran has plenty of crude but a shortage of gasoline because it does not have the capacity to refine what it pumps out of the ground. It has to import gasoline.

  7. US Gas Prices Are Still  Cheap  Fuel subsidies are common in oil-rich countries. Venezuela, which has vast oil reserves, maintains a price of Bs.F 0.097 per litre (around US$0.05), and has done so since 1998.

Other countries with subsidised fuel include Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Burma, Malaysia, Kuwait, India, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, Brunei and Nigeria.

The Australian state of Queensland also subsidises fuel at the rate of A$0.08354 per litre

Gasoline prices are low in the United States when compared with most other Western countries. In June of 2008, gasoline prices in the United States were US$1.06/litre (US$4.00 per US gallon).

    Belgium (Brussels) US$/gal   $8.44

    Denmark US$/gal  $9.31

    Italy  US$/gal  $8.78

    Hong Kong  US$/gal  $8.33

    Netherlands US$/gal 9.73

    Kuwait US$/gal 0.79

    The cheapest.?  Venezuela  US$/gal 0.19
