  1. Comparisons are difficult since I believe we still use "Imperial" gallons and you don't, and we buy our petrol in litres now anyway.

Then we'd have to find average prices across both countries and a representative exchange rate.

Then to answer the question we'd have to compare the average earnings for each country to see the standard of living differences and how much a gallon really represents in respect to "spending power" rather than just it's instant cash value.

    Hmm.

Bottom line though is a gallon of gas (petrol) costs about 118.2ppl according to the AA site:

    http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fue...

    So.

A UK gallon of gas is 118.2 * 4.54609 = 537.34 pence per gallon, which is 447.78 pence per US gallon, which is 875.94 US cents (using Google currency conversion) or $8.76.

This leads me to believe that you should be cheerful about gas prices in the US, and perhaps contemplate selling me some nice and cheap.

  2. I think we all have the right to complain.  We need to switch to smaller cars but I know that's hard when you have a big family.  Maybe we should start carpooling to work and school.

  3. at the moment, in the north east of the UK

    diesel is £1.29 per litre...

petrol is about £ 1.16 per litre...

compared to this time last year it was about £ 0.89 per litre

at this rate most of us wonmt be able to afford to run our vehicles...

  4. about  4  and  a  half..roughly

  5. About $8 a gallon if I take it that the US gallon is about 80% of the imperial gallon

£1.14 per litre times 4.5 = £5.13 per imperial gallon

say 2$ to the £ that is $10.26 per imperial gallon

80% of that is about $8 to the gallon.

I think it silly and pointless to aim abuse at Amereicans because of a genuine question

  6. You have the right to complain but I think at the last check, the UK paid roughly double. When we first went to the US, filling the car up was like putting water in, it was so cheap.

  7. Typical American, always wanting to complain about something.

Come and live here and tell us how hard things are.

Of course you have a right to complain,it will go in one ear and out of the other.

  8. £70plus to fill a small car.. double your price

  9. Diesel over here is about £1.30 for a litre, and petrol at about £1.18 both of which are about $2.50 and $2.25 or something like that.

Approximately 4.5 litres to a gallon therefore costing us £5.85 for a gallon of diesel and £5.31 for a gallon of petrol.

Both of which are in excess of $10,

Therefore giving us a bigger right to complain :)

  10. Im pretty sure that fuel in Australia is dearer than USA as well, but not as bad as UK, yet.

We are currently paying around $1.80pl, which works out at around $6.70 per gallon, so even with money conversion, its over $6 per gallon.

Our fuel is tipped to hit over $2 per litre before Xmas.

  11. Think yourselves lucky....our petrol is £5.50 ($11) per gallon.

  12. Its easy for us to say the Americans get cheap fuel but bear in mind we get nearly $2/£1. Of course it's cheap to us if we visit the U.S. Try buying it when your wages/salary are based on the average American income.

I do admit though, I think if they were to drive smaller engined vehicles it would help!

Under 20mpg is very common in a lot of U.S. vehicles!
