  1. The growing season up there is very short and everything is extrmely expensive. I know that It does not get warm enough to grow alfalfa so you'd be feeding grass hay and a lot of grain most of the year. A lot of it depends on where you would be living as to what's available but most would have to be shipped in from the lower 48. In a lot of places the weather gets really bad and so you would either have to have a barn or rent stalls. You might consider going up there and checking things out before you take them up there. Don't for get to check and see what Canada requires before you take off. Every place you go has different requirements.

  2. sorry i don't know but try looking on the web ( search on google) and if that come back with nothing then you could search on google for bording stables in alaska and give them a call (or email) i'm sure they would be happy to help

  3. in the AQHA mag last month i believe, they said it was about $32 PER BALE!!! eek. move to southern alaska, normal temps there... colder winters and warmer/ hot summers.

  4. What part of Alaska?

We buy our hay from the lower 48 & have it shipped up here which is getting more & more expensive as fuel prices skyrocket.  Right now Alaska has the highest fuel prices in the nation.  Everything up here is more expensive & depending on where you live, can be more expensive than in others.  Housing prices are absolutely ridiculous, unemployment is going up, but like everywhere else, the prices are NOT going down.

The grain we purchase for our horses runs over $19 per 50# bag & I have heard the prices could be going up on that also because almost everything (not just horse stuff) is shipped in from other places.

Think long & hard about moving up.  Most people think it would be cool, but they last only a few months or a year due to the high cost of living & depending on where you live, the harsh weather & isolation.

I found some local coastal bermuda hay, but it is all in large rould bails & we just do not have the facilities to store them.  They were like $30 per round, but they did not deliver.

  5. I've heard it's $10-$12 per bale.  Yikes!

  6. I am not sure what the price of hay is there now, but you can bet that it will not be any cheaper than down home.  I know that you can usually get horse feed at Walmart or even Myers stores.  There are also horse tack and feed stores in some of the bigger towns.  From what I remember Delta Junction does grow their own hay, in fact it used to be quite a business.  Only one cutting I think but their fields are quite large.  I would suggest starting there to find a good place then talking to the locals and stopping at the feed stores asking around...word of mouth is usually the best advertisements.
