How much is it going to cost me to live in Dublin, Ireland for 4 months?

I'm studying abroad in Ireland for 4 months next spring. I'll be staying with a host family within a mile or so of the school...so I'll have a free place to stay. Also, I get 2 free meals per day.

I'll have to pay for 1 meal per day, plus transportation to and from school and other places within a relatively short distance.

How much does short-distance transportation cost in Dublin? And food in restaurants? I live in the US...so I'm not familiar with their prices.

If you've studied or lived near Dublin, please give me the low down on these details, and anything else I should know about how much this trip is going to cost me. Thanks! - Jesse

the bus service in dublin is very good and cheap i live in north dublin a cup of tea is about 1.20euro a chicken in eddie rockets is about 10 euro but if you go to tesco you can buy a whole chicken for 3.99 euro services are very dear but you will love the place------

If you go on the bus, make sure you have exact change.  It speeds things up. If you go over, they print you a refund slip that you redeem at the main Dublin Bus Office on O'Connell Street. All you do is drop your change in the meter when you board.  If you don't want to bother with the change, get a bus pass.  A 7-day pass is €20.00.  You buy passes any Spar, Centra, SuperValu i.e., any convenient store or supermarket or at the Dublin Tourism office in the city centre or airport).  However, you said you are only a mile away, so this may be the minimum fare of €.95.  It depends on how many "stages" your trip is.  But, a pass saves time, you dont have to look for change.  Also, if you want to explore Dublin via bus, a pass is ideal.

As far as meals go, you can eat cheap (by Dublin standards)Dublin has an abundance of sandwich shops and "chippys".  Budget about €5-10 a day for  a meal.  It may seem high to you, but Dublin is just an expensive place.  

If you want to go out and drink, expect to pay €5-7 a pint of beer or €8 a cocktail.

In conclusion, expect to budget €300 for your transport and €1200 for meals.  This is a total of €1500 or $1940 US dollars.  Therefore, bring at least $3000 to cover transport, food, and spending money.

well if your living  a  mile of the collage the cheapest method of transport would be to walk.the next method would be the bus service which is pretty cheap.another method to travel short distances within the city would be the Lucas (which a type of train)it is more expensive than the bus service.on campus there is a few restaurants that service food from snacks to dinners.if you take part in the social scene a pint works out at move 3euro in Dublin.your cost of living depends out how often you go out and what sites you choose to see.you also must take into account that the dollar is not as strong as the euro on the currency market.you may need  3500 euro maybe more
