  1. Alaska is not cheap!

Part of the year you will be living for long hours without sun and long nights.  Winters are harsh and your utility cost is going to be high during those periods.  Produce bought in the markets are mostly flown in or trucked in since the growing season is very short . . . accounting for a higher distribution cost.

To get a job you should start by going on the internet and contacting employment agencies.  Technically you could sit in your own house/apt right now and design. . .Just build your own site and start getting business so when you end up in Alaska you will be able to continue with the same clients and more.

The cost of housing changes too with the seasons since work is seasonally and the demand will be higher during the warm season.

Personally if I could hack it, that would be the place where I want to be, however, during the winter you will have to be tough and fight cabin fever. . . .

  2. Alaska is a huge state. It all depends on where you are thinking of living. The further out from a big city the cheaper the housing is but then the cost of fuel and groceries goes up, too. Try looking in the classified ads online: Anchorage Daily News and Fairbanks Daily Miner. Housing ranges from a cabin with an outhouse and oil lamps to mansions. Best of luck to you.
