  1. If you cannot get a South-Western mega-train ticket, you can register with Southern and obtain a £10 day ticket, but this means you will have to use the slightly longer route via Horsham and East Croydon.

  3. The fastest route is by South West Trains from Portsmouth to London Waterloo; they run every 30 minutes and take around 90 minutes (slightly longer on Sundays). The cheap day return fare or saver return to London is £24.50 (£30.10 before 10 am on weekdays). You can can get one third off the £24.50 fare with a railcard which of course can be used for discounts on other  rail journeys throughout the year. SWT participates in 'Megatrain' which offers much cheaper advanced booked fares on several trains each day.
