  1. Depends on what city you're in.

Moving rates in Chicago start at $85/hour for three movers.

Remember this means the company takes half

    and pays each mover $10-$12/hour.

I've used movers this cheap. They were very hard working, but had no respect for the words "fragile" or "glass". If you have something that you CANNOT have broken, move it yourself.

    Labor $85-$200/hour for three movers

There will be a minimum hire (usually three hours).

    Plus a truck fee. ($50-100)

Plus gas (usually about $1/mile) from the shop to your house, and to the new house

These rates are only if you do all of your packing, don't use their boxes, tape or bubble wrap, or buy any extras (mattress bags or whatever)

A minimum of 3 hours sounds great. But it doesn't stop there.

When you've moved yourself was it completely done and in the new place in three hours?

Probably closer to an entire day.

Professional movers don't do it very much faster than regular people. They just save you the effort.

I moved a three bedroom apt. third floor to third floor 10min. away.

With four movers, it took eight hours and cost me close to $1000.

Consider doing it the old fashion way and hiring high school kids they'll take $5/hour and pizza.

You'll probably cut your entire moving cost in half.

  2. WELL IT DEPENDS ON THE MOVING COMPANY. THEY MIGHT PRICE YOU BY HOW MANY ROOMS YOU HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE PLUS THE MILES FROM YOUR OLD TO YOUR NEW HOUSE. GO TO THE YELLOW PAGES AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN FIND.
